About the Company
Our client is a premier provider of Structured Literacy solutions, dedicated to empowering educators through the science of reading. With nearly 30 years of experience, they have pioneered foundational skills curriculum, professional development, and coaching rooted in the Orton-Gillingham methodology. Their mission-driven approach reaches millions of students nationwide, providing the high-quality tools and training necessary to achieve measurable growth in literacy.
About the Role
We are looking for a Software Engineer to join a high-impact, tight-knit technology team. This role has been opened to fill a two-year gap in the internal team, with the specific goal of bringing development work—currently managed by a third-party vendor—back in-house.
Your primary focus will be to relieve senior developers of maintenance tasks and internal tool management, allowing the team to scale strategic, forward-thinking projects. This is not a role for a "task-taker" but for a true team member who wants to be integrated into the company’s mission and culture.
Responsibilities
Develop and maintain proprietary teacher-facing lesson planning, assessment, and e-commerce tools primarily using Django/Python.
Collaborate with the US-based team to successfully transition workflows from external vendors to internal systems, ensuring stability, security, and high code quality.
Act as a "force multiplier" by leveraging AI-assisted development tools (like Claude) to accelerate development velocity and build innovative AI-driven features.
Manage and optimize services within an AWS environment, specifically focusing on S3 and EC2 instances.
Participate in daily syncs with a diverse, compassionate, and merit-based team, contributing actively to code reviews, documentation, and architectural discussions.
Design and maintain critical APIs that connect the platform with third-party fulfillment systems, accounting tools, and relational databases (MySQL).
Competencies and Qualifications
Must-Have
2+ years of software development experience.
Strong proficiency in Python and Django.
Familiarity with or willingness to learn Blazor/.NET on the job.
Solid understanding of relational databases, specifically MySQL.
Proven experience in API design and third-party integrations.
Practical experience with AWS (S3, EC2).
Proficiency with AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Claude) to improve efficiency.
Nice-to-Have
Previous experience in the education sector.
AWS Certified Developer or Cloud Practitioner.
A strong portfolio of previous projects (Highly Valued).
Key Qualities
The "Architect" Mindset: You use AI to accelerate implementation, but you rely on your own engineering fundamentals to design thoughtful solutions.
Mission-Driven: You are excited about the prospect of using technology to solve literacy challenges for students and teachers.
Collaborative & Communicative: You thrive in a "daily collaboration" environment and enjoy participating in code reviews and documentation.
Inquisitive & Analytical: You ask the right questions to solve complex problems.
Action-Oriented: You have a bias for growth and moving projects forward.
